Backlinks for AI Search: We Checked the Sites AI Cites Most. 0 of 5 Passed a Followed Link

We tested the 14 domains AI assistants cite most, read 12 ranking guides, and checked what Google, OpenAI and Perplexity actually say. Links still count, mostly one step removed.

Backlinks still matter for AI search, but mostly one step removed: they help a page rank, and ranking pages are a big share of what AI assistants cite. The direct win is different. AI answers lean on a short list of sites, such as Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Forbes and G2, and links from those sites pass little or no link equity. Being named there is the point.

That is the short version. The rest of this page is what we checked to get there, on October 29, 2026:

  • 14 domains that a 30-million-citation study ranks as the most cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. We read each one's robots.txt and tested the outbound links on a typical page.
  • 12 ranking guides on backlinks for AI search, LLM SEO and "GEO", tallied for what they claim and what they source.
  • What Google, OpenAI and Perplexity say in their own documentation, quoted word for word.

What Google, OpenAI and Perplexity actually say#

Start with the people who run the systems. None of them names backlinks as a factor for being cited.

Google's AI features and your website page (last updated December 10, 2025) says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be shown as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." The same page says "You can apply the same foundational SEO best practices for AI features as you do for Google Search overall."

That matters for links, because links are part of those foundations. Google's May 2025 post on AI search adds one more line worth keeping: "Focus on making unique, non-commodity content."

OpenAI's crawler documentation is about access, not ranking: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." It recommends "allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file."

Perplexity's bot page says the same thing in different words: "PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity," and "we recommend allowing PerplexityBot in your site's robots.txt file."

So the official position is: be crawlable, be indexed, do normal SEO. Everything beyond that comes from outside studies.

The best evidence is correlation, and the authors say so. Four Ahrefs studies do most of the work.

Ranking still feeds AI Overviews, less than before. In July 2025, about 76% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google's top 10. Ahrefs re-ran it in March 2026 across 863,000 keyword results and 4 million cited URLs: "37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared within the first 10 blocks. The rest were almost evenly split between positions 11–100 (31.2%) and beyond the top 100 blocks (31.0%)." Ahrefs notes that AI Overviews moved to Gemini 3 in January 2026. Google's own page says AI features may use "query fan-out", running several related searches to build one answer, which pulls in pages that do not rank for the original query.

ChatGPT overlaps with Google far less. In an Ahrefs test of 15,000 prompts (published August 2025, data collected July 2025), "only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 results for the same prompt." For ChatGPT's in-text citations alone the figure was 8.0%. Perplexity was the outlier at 28.6%.

Bar chart: share of URLs cited by AI search that also rank in Google's top 10, from two Ahrefs studies (an AI Overview citation study run in July 2025 and re-run in March 2026, and a 15,000-prompt overlap study published August 2025 with data collected July 2025). Not a single time series. Axis 0 to 100 percent. AI Overviews, July 2025: about 76%. AI Overviews, March 2026: 37.9% (863,000 keyword results, 4 million cited URLs; 31.2% ranked 11 to 100 and 31.0% beyond 100). Perplexity (overlap study): 28.6% of citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. ChatGPT in-text citations (overlap study): 8.0% (15,000 prompts). Highlighted: the March 2026 AI Overviews figure and ChatGPT, showing that ranking explains a shrinking share of AI citations.

Mentions correlate more strongly than links. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands (May 2025) found "Web mentions (0.664) correlate much more strongly than backlinks (0.218)." Referring domains came in at 0.295 and Domain Rating at 0.326. A December 2025 follow-up across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews found "very weak correlations between link metrics ("number of backlinks" and "URL rating") and brand mentions across all AI systems," with YouTube mentions strongest at about 0.737.

None of this says links do nothing. It says the path runs through rankings, and that being talked about across the web lines up with being named more closely than raw link counts do. We covered the wider ranking evidence in do backlinks still matter.

The sites AI cites most, tested#

If AI answers lean on a few sites, the practical question is what a link from those sites is worth. So we tested them.

Peec AI's March 2026 analysis counted "30 million sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews in the US." Its top 10 overall: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Forbes, G2, Yelp, Facebook, Medium and TechRadar. We added PCMag (in Gemini's top five) and Tripadvisor, Trustpilot and Clutch, which Peec names among the top 100. That is 14 domains.

The links. We fetched one typical page per domain with external links to companies. Nine of the 14 blocked a normal request (403, 400 or a bot challenge), so we report only the five we could read:

Site Page tested What the company links were
Wikipedia HubSpot article All 66 external links nofollow, official site included
YouTube A music video page Description links only in script data, all via youtube.com/redirect
LinkedIn HubSpot company page Website link via linkedin.com/redir/redirect
PCMag Best CRM roundup All 92 vendor links sponsored, via an affiliate redirect
TechRadar Best CRM roundup 23 vendor buttons sponsored; a few in-text vendor tracking links with no rel

On none of the five did a company get a plain, followed link in the content. The only possible exception was a handful of TechRadar text links that point at the vendor's own tracking redirects, which a script may rewrite in the browser. We did not verify that.

The robots.txt files. We could read 12 of the 14. Many of the most cited sites block AI crawlers outright with "Disallow: /":

Bar chart: how many of the 12 most-cited AI search domains whose robots.txt we could read on October 29, 2026 block each AI crawler from the whole site with Disallow: /. Domains from Peec AI's March 2026 analysis of 30 million citations (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Forbes, G2, Facebook, Medium, TechRadar, PCMag, Tripadvisor, Trustpilot; Yelp and Clutch could not be read). Axis 0 to 12 domains. GPTBot: 7. ClaudeBot: 7. CCBot: 6. PerplexityBot: 5 (Reddit, LinkedIn, Forbes, Facebook, PCMag). Google-Extended: 4. OAI-SearchBot: 3 (Reddit, Facebook, PCMag). Highlighted: the two search crawlers. Reddit and Facebook block them and are still among the most cited.

Reddit's file blocks every crawler it has not named with a two-line rule: "User-agent: *" then "Disallow: /". Facebook blocks all six bots we checked. Yet Reddit and Facebook sit near the top of the citation counts. The assistants are getting that content another way, through search indexes or access deals. We did not test which.

What this means for link building. A product mention on Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn or a big review roundup is worth chasing for AI visibility. It is not worth chasing as a backlink. Treat the link equity from those pages as close to zero unless you check the specific page yourself. Our dofollow vs nofollow guide covers how to check.

What 12 ranking guides tell you to do#

We read 12 guides that rank for these searches: Yoast, Loganix, SEO.com, SE Ranking, Exploding Topics (Semrush), Respona, Writesonic, Searchable, Contently, Page One Power, Click Intelligence and LLM Pulse.

Bar chart: how many of 12 ranking guides on backlinks for AI search, read October 29, 2026 (Yoast, Loganix, SEO.com, SE Ranking, Exploding Topics, Respona, Writesonic, Searchable, Contently, Page One Power, Click Intelligence, LLM Pulse), make three claims and back them up three ways. Axis 0 to 12. All 12 publishers sell a related tool or service. Claim: backlinks help AI visibility: 12 of 12; Claim: schema is a factor: 7 of 12; Claim: mentions matter as much or more: 6 of 12; Back it: link a data study: 5 of 12; Back it: quote Google or OpenAI docs: 2 of 12; Back it: tell you to check robots.txt: 1 of 12. Highlighted: only 5 link a data study, 2 quote platform documentation, and 1 tells you to check robots.txt, the one step Google, OpenAI and Perplexity all name.

All 12 say backlinks help AI visibility, mostly "indirectly". All 12 publishers sell a related tool or service. Only 5 link a data study with a number, and about 21 of roughly 137 numeric claims across the 12 carry a link. Two quote Google or OpenAI documentation. One tells you to check your robots.txt for AI crawlers, which is the one thing all three platforms actually ask for.

The guides also disagree with each other. SE Ranking's own ChatGPT study says "backlinks remain the strongest signal of trust and credibility." Loganix says "visibility doesn't come from how many links you have." Searchable lands in the middle: "links still support visibility, but mostly by helping pages rank well enough to be considered for citation." That middle line is the one the evidence supports.

Here is the process the evidence points to. It is normal link building with a different target list.

Flow diagram of five steps for backlinks and AI search. 1, let the crawlers in: allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot in robots.txt. 2, keep earning links to the pages you want cited, because ranking still feeds AI Overviews. 3, get named on the list posts, reviews and threads AI already cites, even when the link is nofollow. 4, make the page easy to quote: a direct answer first and numbers nobody else has. 5, rerun the same prompts monthly and log whether you are named. Steps 1 and 3 are highlighted: only 1 of 12 guides covers step 1, and 3 of 12 cover step 3.

1. Let the crawlers in. Open your robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot are not blocked. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, not Search, so decide on it separately. This takes five minutes and is the only step all three platforms name.

2. Keep earning links to the pages you want cited. AI Overviews still cite top-10 pages about 38% of the time, and links help pages get there. Aim at your comparison pages, your data pages and your best "how to" pages. The usual methods work: digital PR, guest posts and broken link building.

3. Get named on the pages AI pulls from. Run the prompts your buyers type, such as "best backlink tool for agencies", in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Write down every cited page. Those list posts, roundups, review profiles and threads are your target list. A listing or mention there counts for AI even when the link is nofollow.

4. Make the page easy to quote. Put a direct answer near the top, use clear headings, and include numbers nobody else has. Google asks for "unique, non-commodity content." A page that answers the question in its first two sentences is easier to cite than one that warms up for 300 words.

5. Check whether it worked. Re-run the same prompts monthly and log whether you are named and which page is cited. Eight of the 12 guides recommend tracking. Do it by hand at first; it costs nothing.

Steps 2 and 3 are outreach: finding the right pages, writing to the people who run them, and following up. That is the part GenLink does. You describe your site in a short brief, and the agent finds relevant pages, sends personal pitches and follow-ups, so you can spend your time on the pages worth being cited from.

Frequently asked questions#

Do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT? Indirectly. OpenAI's documentation only asks you to allow OAI-SearchBot. In Ahrefs' test, 8.0% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, and link metrics correlated weakly with being mentioned.

Do backlinks help with Google AI Overviews? Yes, through rankings. Google says there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. In March 2026, 37.9% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025.

Are brand mentions more important than backlinks for AI search? They correlate more strongly. Ahrefs found brand web mentions at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks across 75,000 brands. That is correlation, not proof that mentions cause citations.

Is a link from Reddit or Wikipedia a good backlink? Not for link equity. Every external link on the Wikipedia page we tested was nofollow, and Reddit blocked our requests. A mention there can still help you get named in AI answers.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt? Only if you don't want to appear in those answers. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Blocking GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate choice.

What is GEO, and is it different from link building? GEO, or generative engine optimization, means getting your brand cited in AI answers. It overlaps with link building: the outreach is the same, but the target list is the pages AI already cites, and a nofollow mention can count.

The short version#

Links still get you ranked, and ranking still feeds AI answers. Mentions on the sites AI reads get you named. Let the crawlers in, keep building links to the pages you want cited, and put your product on the lists and threads the assistants already quote. Write your first brief on the free plan and let the agent start the outreach.
